Ashtanga yoga is an eight-limbed
path of yoga, consisting of yamas (self-restraints), niyamas
(personal observances), asanas (postures), pranayama
(breath control), pratyahara (sensory withdrawal), dharana
(concentration), dhayana (meditation), and samadhi
(absorption in the Self). Through constant awareness & practice
of these eight limbs, we are able to cultivate a deep surrender to
the unfolding of what is and who we are. The daily practice of the
asanas, using the vinyasas, drishti, and bandhas of the ashtanga yoga
system, as taught by Guruji (Sri K. Pattabhi Jois) & R. Sharath
in Mysore, India, serves as a vehicle through which we purify ourselves
internally, creating a sound, healthy body and steady mind. Through
the refinement of the gross to the subtle, we are embarking on a powerful
journey of profound self-transformation and healing. When we practice
with devotion, compassion, and surrender, we come to realize that
our center is everywhere and our circumference is nowhere. There is
ultimately no difference between the jivatma (the individual
self) and the paramatma (the universal Self). We are able
to connect with an immense inner joy and peace. Slowly, slowly, we
are able to move from the external to the internal to the eternal.
